I used a fence like this for years with my first router table. Another trick I used was to clamp a 1×2 on the table with the end just short of the bit. I then used the corner of the board to pivot my work into the bit since I didn't have a starter pin.

Actually a good tip for some of today's millennials. We have young men show up at the machine shop wanting jobs that can't point out ANY measurement on a tape measure. For instance, "show me 2 & 1/2" on this tape measure". They can't do it so I show it to them and tell them "this is how big your brain is" ;^) What's amazing here is Phil keeps a straight face! Good humor!
