Usually, the Japanese joints are extremely well done. But this joint is not well made, the dark wood tendon is forcing the light wood sides to splay. Usually on Japanese joints you never see a spot where the wood has gaps in it. Just my opinion

Where would this joint be useful? It doesn't look good, doesn't look tight, and takes a long time to cut and fit. I mean it's a clever piece of fluff but I don't see where it could be cost effective.
